I have always liked multiple Christian music genres, but there are still some that I have not yet explored, one of which is jazz. Now that is one music style that I would never choose to listen to, simply because I don’t like it. Is that about to change I wonder? Lets get started.
I had no idea if there were any Christian jazz bands or solo artists out there so I asked Spotify to help me. To my surprise there were, what seemed to be, endless playlists for me to choose from.
I started listening to various tracks but nothing appealed to me until I came to Denver And The Mile High Orchestra. I really liked their sound, in fact it took me back to some of the scenes I have seen in old black and white movies.
This band covers a wide range of music from traditional hymns to the old jazz classics, Pennsylvania 6-5000, being one such tune that I remembered, and quite liked, from Glenn Miller. They also perform a lot of their own material.
I’m going to begin with a well-known hymn that we often use for the Church At Hiraeth in our ‘Upper Room’ services. ‘Great Is Thy Faithfulness’ here, sounds so very different, but it works. I’m surprised how much I am enjoying this venture so far.
Moving on to some of their own material. The first one I have chosen has some scat singing on it, I do know a little about this and although I appreciate it is very clever, it has never really appealed to me. I do however, find myself liking this track ‘Act The Scat’ here. I’ve posted the video version as it was nice to watch the little movie whilst listening.
‘God’s Eye View’ here, is another song that I enjoyed, I can definitely see this one in an old movie, it really takes me back to another era.
Well, I have really enjoyed my introduction to another music genre and In answer to my previous question, yes, I have changed my mind. I do now like this particular kind of jazz, and will be making myself a playlist on Spotify, for Denver And The Mile High Orchestra.
Just to finish, I have included their version of ‘I Saw The Light’, here. It’s a song, I would imagine, a lot will be familiar with, but I don’t think you will have heard it quite like this before. What an intro from the double bass, brilliant!
I do hope you enjoy listening as much as I have.
