New Year-New Music was going to be my title but I’ll save that for next week. Instead I wanted to take the opportunity to look at a song that we are having in our real Church on Sunday evening and also two songs that I am singing at a ladies meeting next week.
Well, ‘Happy new Year’ to everyone, I can’t believe how quickly the days are flying by already. The first song I want to share today is one that has been a favourite of mine for years. We used to sing it a lot in our previous Church at one time but it hasn’t been aired as such, for quite some time. I’m quite looking forward to revisiting it again. It has such beautiful lyrics and is overall just a beautiful song.
The song is ‘The Stand’, by Hillsong United and comes from the ‘IHeart Revolution’ album. I had this on CD and it had a lot of plays, there are so many of my favourites on it. It comes well recommended and if you want a listen you can find it here.
Back to ‘The Stand’, as I said earlier it was sung a lot in Churches when it first came out, but as with a lot of songs they have their day and then get replaced by new ones. Therefore I was pleasantly surprised to see it on the song list for Sunday’s service at our own Church. I’m leading the first part of the service but I shall be looking forward to singing this later on. The version I have chosen to share with you is from YouTube here as it has been illustrated with a cute cartoon that really brings out the meaning of the song beautifully.
The two songs that I am singing next week are very different. The first is a very old and well-known hymn, ‘What A Friend We Have In Jesus’. It was written by Joseph M. Scriven in 1855, old it may be but the reality of the words has not changed over the years. I’ve found a lovely version by Stephen McWhirter here
The second song is more modern, but saying that it came out in 2006, which has been 20 years ago now, that makes me feel old. The song, ‘How Can I Keep From Singing’, is by Chris Tomlin who is known for writing many worship songs used in the Church. I love the lyrics and it is a song that I enjoy singing. The one I have chosen for you here, is a special acoustic version. As I play the guitar myself I always enjoy the acoustic recordings.
I do hope you enjoy my song selections this week and I will see you again next time with ‘New Year- New Music’.
