As today is Good Friday, I thought I would again skip the alphabet search and write instead an Easter special. I’ve chosen five songs that will lead us through the progression of the Easter story.
Let me begin with one of my favourite bands who have featured before, Chaotic Resemblance, with a song called ‘Hosanna’ here. At Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, as the crowds recognised him as the promised King and Messiah, they waved palm branches and shouted “Hosanna to the Son of David!” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”
Just a few days later Jesus was put to death on a cross. Here is a lovely song by Pocket Full Of Rocks called ‘Jesus Died My Soul To Save’. The title of the song gives us the whole reason for Easter.
Thankfully, the story doesn’t end there, and three days later Jesus rose from the grave and defeated death. Tommee Profitt and Phil Wickham have come up with an amazing version of the traditional hymn, ‘He Arose’. I’ve chosen a video of their performance here.
The next song tells us that Jesus is our Living hope. We have been given a new life through his death for us and a hope of eternal life in Heaven. Here is Shane & Shane singing ‘Living Hope’.
The final song I have chosen is another by Phil Wickham. It sums up all of the previous songs, giving a progression of the Easter events, from Good Friday, right through to the second coming of Jesus. I love this song and I do urge you to listen to the lyrics. I especially like the line “Friday’s good ’cause Sunday is coming.” It’s called ‘Sunday Is Coming’ and you can watch the official music video here. There is also a short devotional video, by Phil Wickham, that goes alongside the song. It is very good, so I have included the link here if you would like to watch it.
I wish you all a happy and blessed Easter time and, as you are eating your roast dinner or chocolate eggs, or even listening to the songs I have selected this week, remember the real meaning of Easter. A celebration of the death and rising again of Jesus Christ, bringing us hope and forgiveness from God.
