No Holiday

I have something a little different for you today. I don’t think I could ever be accused of being stuck in one music genre. Last time I mentioned we would be looking at the letter K next, so I have been searching Spotify and Google and have found quite a few bands and artists that I initially liked the sound of. However, none of them really appealed to me, until I came across K3ndrick.

I have really enjoyed listening to quite a few tracks from K3ndrick and I have chosen just a few to share with you. There isn’t much information about him on the web, other than the fact that he is a Christian artist from Nigeria. This reflects a lot in his songs, as he does add a few non-English words.

One that I recognised immediately was the word Unkulunkulu and, you may think, how on earth do you know that word. Well, it takes me back many years, when when Stewart and I ran a ministry which worked, amongst other things, with several ministers throughout Africa. Stewart wrote a Studies In Leadership booklet for the African Pastors and my job was to type that up for him on an actual typewriter, (there were no computers in those days).

One of the Pastors wanted the book translated into Zulu. He sent us the translation and I typed the whole thing up to make into the booklets. It was a very long job, as I had to type each individual letter and then look for the next as I didn’t know any complete words. One word that remained with me to this day though is the word for God, which is Unkulunkulu.

One particular song which includes some Zulu is ‘Nkosi Yami’ and the opening lyrics are translated as, ‘Our Father in heaven I love you, My Lord Your kingdom come. I thank you, my Lord.’ A little like ‘The Lord’s Prayer’. It goes on to mention the word Unkulunkulu, so I had to include this one in my review. You can listen here.

There are a few words used in the songs that are really descriptive and I love their meanings. In the track ‘Hold On’ here, he uses the word chuckwuma which means God knows best – God possesses ultimate wisdom and will guide the individual on the right path. I really love that description.

Another song, ‘No Holiday’, mentions Oluwa which means sovereignty – God as a master, protector and caretaker. Here is a video version for you to watch.

I’ll end with the first song that made me take notice of K3ndrick. It’s called ‘Far Far’ and you can listen here. I like his voice, I find it quite relaxing to listen to and I love that his songs are a little different too. I also like the positive lyrics to all of his songs. I hope you enjoy them too, it’s always nice to discover something a little different.

Have a great week and see you next time.
