I think I have done really well with my Alphabet search this week. We have reached the letter L and I was back on my quest to find some new, good music. As much as I love all the American bands I have come across, I always think it sad that we don’t have many big Christian bands here in the UK. BUT… this week I have excelled myself and come up with a great new band from Brighton, England. They are an indie-pop band called Lion Of Judah.
The lead vocalist Josh Bannister suffered from crippling anxiety and, trying something that he had never done before, he began writing songs to God. He created a band with four other members and they came up with a very unique brand of music, especially for here in the UK.
I really like the style of his vocals and the fact that they are, as a band, simply a bit different. The first song I came across was called ‘Joy’ and, as soon as I heard this, I knew I was going to like them. Their sound reminded me a little of the band Superhero, which is another UK band that we used to go and see quite regularly in concert back in the early 2000’s. Here‘s a little snippet of them just for comparison. Anyway, back to Lion Of Judah, I love the lyrics to this song, learning to trust God in every circumstance we find ourselves in, and learning to find inner peace and joy. You can listen here.
The beauty of Christian music is that often the lyrics are very real to us and relate to things that we all go through from time to time. Listening to them helps us to realise that we are not alone in our struggles and trials, and the positive lyrics can help and strengthen us, leading us to God.
The next song I chose is called ‘Somebody New’ here. It’s basically about praying to God when we need something, or we need help, but then, when we feel ok we don’t bother with prayer anymore. It’s about wanting to be someone who learns to really trust God for our every need and live as He intended us to.
My final song for Lion Of Judah is called ‘I Am Jonah’ here. I love this song, it’s a very catchy tune, especially the refrain. It’s based on the Bible story of Jonah, who tried to run away from God.
Just to end, as they begin with L, I have to include another UK band that we saw live, again, back in the early 2000’s. They are a hip hop/rap style band called LZ7. They were great in concert and ministered in a lot of schools, teaching the youngsters about Jesus. The song I have chosen is one of my favourites, called ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ here.
Hope you have enjoyed my UK-based music this week, see you next time.
