Hello, here we are again, and another week has flown by. I have something a little different to share with you this time, so I hope you will enjoy a little trip down memory lane, perhaps for some of you anyway. It certainly has been for me.
In a week’s time Stewart has been asked to take the service and preach at a church in Dudley, where I will be playing guitar for the worship songs, and possibly leading a couple of songs for the children. Well, the latter is what has inspired this week’s blog. It got me thinking about the old songs that I used to sing back when I was in Sunday school, and also when our two children were young. This has a twist though, the songs I have chosen have been reworked by various artists to make them a little more interesting.
My first offering is one that I came across a few weeks ago by One Bad Pig. This is what initially got me thinking about finding more kids’ choruses with alternative arrangements. It’s called ‘Sunday Skool Rawk’ and it’s a compilation of songs punk style. You can listen here, I’m sure anyone of my age or older will recognise most of them.
I have to say, it’s so hot today I’m currently eating an ice lolly whilst typing to try and cool down, also being very careful not to let it drip onto my keyboard.
My next find, I really like. He is an artist called Juan1Love, he has an amazing testimony. He was into the rave scene and all that went with it, selling and using drugs, into new age spirituality and, as he says, addicted to sin, but this quote from his bio says it all, “God delivered me from real spiritual demons, multiple addictions, a false sense of reality, and showed me that the music I was making and promoting was demonic. That I needed to go make music that actually glorified the one true God and that Jesus Christ was the way, the truth, and the life. Nobody comes to the Father except through HIM. So I left, repented of my sins and began a new life in Christ. This is my story. This is my song. Praising my Savior, all the day Long.”
I have three of his tracks to share with you, he has many others that are really good, but these are the revamped kids’ choruses. The first is ‘Deep and Wide’, here. Not quite how I used to sing it in Sunday school, but I’m loving it. This next song is one that all the kids loved but the leaders not so much… If you know you know. The actions were rather challenging and it went on forever. It might be a good workout track in this format. I’m sure if you have worked in kids’ clubs or been there as a child, yourself you will remember this one. Here it is and it’s called ‘Father Abraham’. I think this has to be my favourite. ‘Jesus Loves Me’ here, is the final track from Juan1Love, again a very popular song back in the day, but sounding very different now.
Thronebreaker have also recorded a version of ‘Jesus Loves Me’, that is, again completely different. It’s reworked into another song, but it’s too good to leave out and you can listen here. ‘This Little Light Of Mine’ here is my last song for today, also by Thronebreaker. Again, it’s not purely the chorus as we remember, it has been reworked into another track.
