Stewart was playing some drum and bass music in the car the other day, Christian of course, and Collistar, to be exact. Our granddaughter who was with us at the time, piped up and said, “I didn’t think you liked that kind of music”.
I explained, it was the lyrics that I didn’t like in the secular music and that I love drum and bass. In fact, I like most kinds of music, but the important thing to me is the content of the lyrics.
I love to search out new music, as I have said in the past, but it saddens me when I come across a band that is listed under the Christian genre, only to discover that they have explicit lyrics in some of their songs.
My Spotify is set to not play any tracks containing such lyrics, so It’s very easy to spot them. There are plenty of secular artists that have age-restricted content in their songs, so I expect Christian music to be different.
Whether it is screamo rock, punk, drum and bass or any other genre it should all, in my opinion, contain wholesome lyrics that are suitable for any age to listen to. I think It’s great when Christian bands and artists cover subjects such as drug use, anxiety, depression, suicide and other such issues, because they use the songs to speak to young and old alike in a positive way, and offer a way out and encourage a new, better way of life as a Christian.
A lot of the artists who write these lyrics have often been in a dark place themselves before they became Christians, so they use these songs to help others in the way that they themselves found help in the past.
The last few weeks I have been looking at Collistar and ANGLER and both of these have amazing lyrics to their songs with no explicit content at all. They use their music to reach out to those that need help and also to encourage Christians and bring praise to God too; that it what Christian music should be about.
As I like to bring new music with each blog, I have another drum and bass artist this week, King Jims. He is actually a friend of the two previously mentioned artists and they do a lot of collaborations together. His lyrics are, again, excellent and uplifting.
