Alive

Hello, I’m continuing with the alphabet challenge this week, and P is the letter of the day. There were a couple of bands I was considering sharing today, but as I did a little search, just in case I could find anything special that I had missed, I came across a band called Pocket Full Of Rocks.

I think I had seen them briefly before, but I hadn’t really listened to them properly. It’s interesting how they came about their band name and here is a short quote that they made in an interview posted on the Cross Rhythms website: “We wrote a song about 10 years ago called ‘Pocket Full Of Rocks‘ and we didn’t have a name. The whole song was about David and Goliath and about how God can use whatever you have, even a pocketful of rocks. The song kind of got popular in our area and since we didn’t have a name kids started calling us ‘the Pocket Full Of Rocks band’ and so it just stuck. So here we are 10 years later with Pocket Full Of Rocks.”

I played a track of theirs called ‘Alive’ and that was it. I had to share that track today, with a couple of others for good measure. I always like to find as much as I can about a new band and I have unearthed some interesting videos for you today along with some great music.

The title track, ‘Alive’, is my main focus. I just really loved it instantly, from the vocals to the lyrics and, well, everything else. It’s my kind of song. Here is a video behind the writing and meaning of the track, before we actually listen to it. It was written with Stu G, who was the lead guitarist in the band Delirious.

I have also found an insight into the making of the track itself, laying down the layers of various instruments with each band member etc. If you are interested in that kind of thing you can watch here.

Interestingly, August 28th is the exact date of their 30th Anniversary concert in 2025, so they became a band 31 years ago today. The band ended in 2013 but have stayed close friends and came together for this special event. They were actually amazed how many tickets they sold in a very short time; they must have been well loved.

There are two others that I particularly liked, firstly, ‘Come As You Are’. They are beautiful lyrics: “He’s not mad at you and He’s not disappointed. His grace is greater still than all of your wrong choices. He is full of mercy and He is ever kind. Hear His invitation, His arms are open wide”. You can listen here.

‘Ever Close To You’ is the final track of the day. I like how this goes through various Biblical characters and how amazing it would have been to be in their shoes. A reminder to always stay close to God. You can listen here.
