Beautiful One

In my last blog, I mentioned Tim Hughes as the author of one of the songs that I shared. It got me thinking that I ought to dedicate this week specifically to his songs, lots of which are sung worldwide and loved by many as they worship and praise God in church.

We have had a few favourites that we sang many times in our own church, so I will be sharing mostly those today.

‘Here I Am To Worship’ is a beautiful song that we often featured in our services, reminding us of the price Jesus paid as he died for our sins on the cross. I have found a lovely version here, performed by Tim Hughes and Cody Carnes.

Easter Sunday is always a special day in church, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus, and I think the next song, ‘Happy Day’, is the perfect fit. The lyrics themselves tell the story beautifully, but when you hear them alongside the tune its quite something. It’s hard to sing it without a smile on your face and you can watch a live recording here.

‘Beautiful One’ is another song that I have included many times whilst leading worship. I have found a great video here, of an informal interview with a very young Tim, explaining how the song came about, performing it and teaching how to play it on the guitar.

It makes me feel old when I see that this video was uploaded 20 years ago. It just shows that his songs have stood the test of time, as they are still being sung in churches today.

Finally, Tim Hughes, as well as being a prolific songwriter, is also an ordained minister in the Church of England. He is based in a church in Birmingham called Gas Street Church.

Within the church they have a worship team that have produced some of their own songs, and one in particular that I like, co-written with Tim, is ‘Love Won’t Stop’, here.

I hope you have enjoyed my choices today and I’ll see you next time.
